RAIN BARRELS Offered To Residents
The West Boylston Department of Public Works is offering RAIN BARRELS to its residents!

clip_image002.jpgThe West Boylston Department of Public Works is pleased to announce that we have received a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to provide 50 New England Rain Barrels to West Boylston residents at the discounted price of $65.00, nearly 46% off the retail price of $119.95.  The DPW has teamed up with The New England Rain Barrel Company and the DEP to offer these rain barrels to help residents conserve water, save money on their water and sewer bills, and reduce storm water run-off.

Rain barrel water can be used to water the garden throughout the growing season.  The average homeowner uses approximately 40% of water for outdoor use. A one inch rainfall on a 1,200 square foot roof will yield over 700 gallons of water. Using a rain barrel is an excellent way to conserve some of this water. A quarter inch run-off from an average roof will easily fill the barrel. If you have 5 storms a season, that equals 275 gallons of free water. Rain barrel use reduces the stress on public water and sewer systems during the summer months and improves storm water management.

The rain barrels are made from 55 gallon plastic recycled containers and are available in limited quantities in red and grey. The tops screw on securely so no children or pets can get in the barrel. They have an inlet opening covered  with a screened louver to keep insects and debris out. The barrels have a brass spigot to allow you to connect a hose for watering and an overflow opening and a hose to divert overflow away from your home.  More information is available at http://www.skyjuice.us/html/rain_barrel.html

The barrels are ready for immediate pick up and can be reserved by calling (508) 835-4820 between 7:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The barrels must be paid for by a check made out to the Town of West Boylston. The barrels can be picked up at the DPW at 35 Worcester Street between 7 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.  Only 50 barrels are on hand and are available on a first come first served basis.
