Grinder Pump Care
Department of Public Works
With the proper care your grinder pump will give you many years of service.

Your home wastewater disposal service is part of a low-pressure sewer system.  The basin collects all the waste from the house.  The solids in the waste are then ground to a small size suitable for pumping.  The grinder pump generates sufficient pressure to pump this slurry from your home to the wastewater collection system.

The grinder pump station is designed to handle routine domestic waste.  While your station is capable of accepting and pumping a wide range of materials, it is advised that the following items not be introduced into any sewer either directly or through a kitchen waste disposal:

Grease
Glass
Dental Floss
Egg Shells
Diapers
Sanitary Napkins
Strong Chemicals
Plastic Objects
Rags or Cloth

Your pump system cannot dispose of wastewater or provide an alarm signal without electrical power.  If your electrical service is interrupted, KEEP WATER USAGE TO A MINIMUM.  If the alarm should go off (red light blinking and horn sounding), there is a button either on the front of the case or on the bottom of the case depending on the model.  This will silence the horn but not shut off the light.  It is then advised that you notify your POLICE DEPARTMENT (508-835-3233) who will page the service technician.  The basin covers should be kept free of any material covering them as the service technician will need to gain access to the control cabinet and the sewer basin.  While the alarm is sounding, again, please KEEP WATER USAGE TO A MINIMUM.

If you have any questions please call the Sewer Division at 508-835-6133.
